About Michael Reynolds

My name is Michael Reynolds. I was born in Bristol, Virginia, a town located where the northeast corner of Tennessee and Virginia meet. In fact, if you walk down the center of State Street, you will have one foot in Virginia and the other in Tennessee. Bristol is also noted as being the birthplace of country music.

My earliest memory of being pulled into the wonderful world of music was the night I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time back in 1964. I’ll never forget it. The impact it made on me would last a lifetime. Later came the Dave Clark Five, The Monkeys, The Archie’s, and the list goes on and on.

My mother relates that when I was in third grade, she would see me walking around the house pretending to play guitar while humming the tune to “Secret Agent Man” and “Daydream Believer”, among many others. Perhaps it was out of the sheer embarrassment of watching me play air guitar that she decided to get me my first guitar that Christmas. It was an acoustic guitar by Audition, around $20.00. I loved it! It was the beginning of an unending passion for playing guitar. From that moment to this day, I have never looked back.

For the next few years, I picked up a chord here and there. My mother taught me to play “Wildwood Flower”, and my older brother showed me a tune every now and then. I would listen to the radio and records, and have my sister write down the lyrics while I figured out how to play the chords. I was spending most of my free time playing guitar. I remember playing once for my sixth grade class at Stonewall Jackson Elementary while a friend of mine sang “Wild Thing”. It was a big hit with my fellow classmates.

To earn money, I was mowing yards and cleaning the shop with my brothers at Bill Gatton Chevrolet. I saved my money and purchased my second guitar from Morrell Music on State Street in Bristol. It was a Fender acoustic guitar, around $100.00, which, believe me, was a lot of money at the time, especially for a kid in the sixth grade.

In Junior High School and many guitars later, I happened into a music store called Blountville Music & Art Center located in Blountville, Tennessee. The owner of the store, Joe Ferraro, still a friend to this day, was attempting to teach a young student a guitar lesson. I was in need of having the strings changed on my 12-string guitar so I commented that if he would work on my 12-string, I would finish the lesson for him. Through the years I had taught several of my friends how to play either the guitar or bass guitar. This was, however, my first attempt at teaching on a more professional level. I was around the age of 17 at the time.

It turned out that Joe liked how I handled the lesson and offered me a position teaching at the music store. The rest as they say is history. I have been teaching ever since. I have taught literally hundreds of people to play guitar on one level or another. I’ve played in several bands along the way, done some studio time off and on, and played many different venues . . . which brings me to where I am today.

Many people through the years have asked me to assemble my years of experience into an instructional DVD. I am very happy to offer my DVD entitled “Michael Reynolds Signature Series”. This DVD is packed with not only the usual instructional sections for the beginning guitar player through advanced finger picking styles, but also many tips that will hopefully save you a lot of time and money along the way when selecting a used guitar, capos, picks, and so on.

In closing, I would like to note that I have never had a guitar lesson myself. I learned to play strictly by ear. Looking back, had I had something like this DVD as a go-by, learning the guitar would have been much easier and seriously faster, and I wouldn’t have made as many costly mistakes along the way.

I thank God for the gift of music, and hope that music enriches your life as it has mine.

Enjoy the series.
Michael Reynolds
